Abstract:

"In Genesis: a Living Conversation, Bill Moyers gathers thoughtful and engaging individuals from a variety of professions to discuss, debate and discover what the Genesis stories say to us today. Passionate, animated, and full of surprises, the conversations take the Bible seriously as a religious document while honoring a democratic spirit that is flexible and tolerant. This televised study group of scholars, artists, writers, therapists, composers, lawyers, and others served as a model for thousandes [sic] of groups which sprang up nationwide supported by the Doubleday book, the Doubleday resource guide and the World Wide Web site surrounding the broadcast"--1996 Peabody Awards entry form. The story of Rebecca tricking Isaac into giving their son Jacob his blessing to become the leader of the Israelites is debated by the roundtable. Questions raised and debated include: was Jacob the right leader to be chosen?; would Esau, Jacob's twin brother, have been a better choice?; what is so important about a blessing?; what motivates Rebecca, and is she the heroine of the story?
